About Vox Machina

Vox Machina is an online Text-To-Speech synthesizer using the built-in speech synthesizer engine of the Mac OS X operating system developed by Apple Computer Inc.. A CGI application feeds the synthesizer with text, receives raw audio and converts it into an MP3 audio file on-the-fly, and finally delivers it over the web to the end user.

MP3-encoding is accomplished using an Altivec-optimized version of the open-source LAME MPEG Audio Layer III encoder. Needless to say, the Vox Machina CGI mechanism only works on a Mac OS X server. Both the mechanism itself and a Mac OS X desktop application are made available under an open-source license on the downloads page.
